Electric vehicle (EV) sales are skyrocketing across the country, with Arizona ranking among the top 10 states for EV registrations per capita. Arizona’s nearly 70,000-strong EV community is growing rapidly, demonstrating the state’s leadership in electric vehicle adoption.
EV owners in Arizona are experiencing significant benefits, particularly in terms of cost savings. For example, a recent 217-mile trip from Phoenix to Tucson in an EV cost only $5.70 using Salt River Project’s off-peak rate of $0.09 per kilowatt-hour. This level of efficiency equates to about 155 miles per gallon, far outperforming traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, especially when gas prices are high.
However, the lack of widespread charging infrastructure remains a challenge for many Arizonans considering the switch to electric vehicles. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and the Inflation Reduction Act aim to address this issue by expanding charging networks and making EVs more accessible across the state.
In Maricopa County, the Air Quality Department recently secured $15 million to install public EV charging stations. This effort will support current and future EV owners, reduce transportation emissions, and contribute to improved air quality in Arizona communities.
These initiatives align with the Biden-Harris administration’s “Justice40 initiative,” which ensures that 40% of clean energy investments benefit disadvantaged communities. By focusing on placing charging stations in Justice40-designated areas, Maricopa County is advancing environmental equity and ensuring that the green economy benefits all residents.
The Arizona Department of Transportation recently updated plans to install fast-charging stations along nine new highways, furthering the state’s commitment to sustainability. These investments are crucial for reducing dependence on fossil fuels and improving air quality for all Arizonans.
