2025: Private Investors Lead the Charge

Electric vehicles (EVs) are mainstream now—and the U.S. charging network is racing to keep up. As of early 2025, there are nearly 200,000 public charging ports, with about 1,000 added each week. But the real story? Private investors are stepping in big to build America’s EV future.

More Chargers, More EVs

EV sales hit 1.6 million in 2024, making up 10% of new cars. Public charging has exploded, especially fast chargersalong highways. California leads with 49,000+ ports, but Texas is surging, now with 10,000+ charging outlets. The U.S. needs double the chargers in just a few years to keep up.

The 2021 Infrastructure Law pumped in $7.5B to kickstart this boom. Programs like NEVI and CFI helped fill gaps, but they also attracted private capital to accelerate the pace.

Private Capital Takes the Wheel

Federal funds move slow—and a recent pause on NEVI grants pushed the private sector forward. Texas, for example, uses an 80/20 split for federal funds and relies on private companies to build and manage stations.

In 2023, Texas embraced free-market solutions, discouraging utility monopolies and opening doors for retailers, startups, and fuel providers. The state also led the way in requiring both CCS and Tesla’s NACS plugs to support all EV models—private tech meets public policy.

Who’s Building?

From Tesla and legacy automakers to startups and oil companies, private investment is pouring in—over $13B so far. Automakers are launching 30,000 new chargers under a joint venture. Tesla’s even opening up 7,500 Superchargers to all brands.

Meanwhile, companies like Amperage Capital in Dallas are funding chargers for apartments and splitting revenue with landlords—zero cost to property owners, new income streams for everyone.

Why Now Is the Moment

EV adoption is up. Charging demand is rising. Government support is uncertain. Private investment is the engine now. Companies are securing real estate, building stations, and preparing for an EV-dominant future.

For investors, this is your chance to get in early. For drivers, more reliable stations are coming fast. Either way, private money is driving the EV revolution.
